PHOTO: Considered an archaeological site, it was the object of several studies. One of the teams, made up of researchers from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) and coordinated by the anthropologist Celso Perota, found 11 skeletons of men who lived approximately 4,500 years ago. It was discovered that since the year 1200 the Cave of Limoeiro was inhabited by Indians. In the colonial period it would have been inhabited by tribes of Indians Puris.
Housing the Puri-Coroados Indians, the cave has already been the scene of intense battles between the native inhabitants of the region and the white colonizer in search of riches. The bloodiest of them occurred in the year 1771 and was favorable to the Indians, who imposed on the invaders a humiliating defeat, forcing them to flee the region.
